Printing from a Personal Device

Please contact us at 801-587-2297 or it@us.utah.edu if you run into any problems with the process.

Mac Instructions

  1. Before anything, you’ll need to download the appropriate driver for the printer you’re trying to connect to. Most of our printers are Canon, which use a universal driver that you can download from here: https://uofu.box.com/s/l7bxmqanzjh2s7ac4g86y56z52zdyk18

  2. Additionally, you’ll need to make sure you’re on campus and connected to UConnect before attempting to add a printer.

  3. To install the driver, simply run the downloaded .pkg file. You will need to know the Administrator login in order to authorize the install.

    1. If this is your personal device, this should just be your own login password.

  4. After it’s been installed, open up System Settings

  5. Search for “Printers & Scanners”

  1. Select “Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax…”

  1. Refer to this table containing the names and models of the printers we support for the next steps:

  1. Select the “IP” tab at the top, and then fill things out as pictured here, replacing Queue and Name with the actual name of the printer you’re trying to add.

  1. Select the “Use:” dropdown, then select “Select Software…”

  1. Use the table above to find the model for the printer you’re trying to add, and type it in the search box. Generally speaking for Canon, select the one without the “III” at the end, then click “OK”.

  1. Finally, select Add. The printer should now show up in your list of printers.

Windows Instructions

  1. Before doing anything, make sure you’re on campus, connected to UConnect, and logged in as an Administrator. Download the following files:

  2. Double-click on each of the downloaded .reg files, and select “Yes” on each prompt.

You will get an error if you are not logged in as an Administrator. If you are logged in as an Administrator, and are still getting an error, restart your computer and try again.

  1. Open File Explorer image-20240412-154833.png

  2. In the address bar at the top, type \\ugs-util.ad.utah.edu like so, and then press enter:

  1. In the prompt that pops up, enter your unid@ad.utah.edu followed by your typical University of Utah password.

  1. You should now see a list of all the printers we manage. Locate the one you want to add, then right-click it and select “Connect…”

After selecting “Connect…” it may appear like nothing is happening. This is normal, it can take a minute or two before the Windows Printer Installation window pops up.

  1. To make sure it worked, use Windows search to locate “Printers & Scanners”. You should see your printer show up in the list

The printer usually takes a few minutes after being added before it actually shows up in your list of printers.
